Selling my product to Ikuru means that I can send my kids to school, pay their tuition, buy them the things they need for school and buy them medicine if they get sick.’

We are extremely excited to bring you the very first Fairtrade certified organic peanut butter. Grown by small holders who are members of the Ikuru association in Mozambique, we have used only the highest quality nuts of the Nematil variety. This traditional type of peanut, which was developed in this region, produces the most delicious tasting nut butter.

Ikuru, meaning “strength” in the Makua language of northern Mozambique, is a business company partly owned by producers’ associations of Nampula province and the south of Niassa.

Founded in 2003 and registered as a limited company, Ikuru has 8,500 members organised into foras (producer groups) producing groundnuts, cashews, sesame and beans. It was established on the initiative of producers to enable them to reap larger returns for their production through ownership of the product through successive stages of the supply chain. Ikuru has been FLO certified since 2005. 

Farmer Benefits

The key benefits to Ikuru members include confidence that they will be able to sell their product at a good price, and that they will not be cheated as they were in the past by traders that use rigged scales.

Whilst ground nuts (peanuts as we know them) are grown widely throughout Africa and are traditional staples in many countries, our stringent quality and health barriers make export very difficult. Our partners have supported the association in its growth to more than 8,000 farmers, and advised on post harvest processing and storage to meet these requirements.

All natural - no additives

We have four varieties available: smooth and crunchy with salt, smooth and crunchy without salt.

They are 100% natural without palm oil or lecithin stabilisers and are roasted without blanching to retain all the natural goodness of the nuts.
