CANDELA - Comercio Alternativo de Productos No Tradicionales y Desarrollo en Latinoamerica - Peru
CANDELA Peru was founded in 1989 as “a processing and trading company based on fair trade principles”, to address these problems and to ensure a better system for producers. CANDELA work under the principles and Code of Practice of the International Fairtrade Association (IFAT).
With capacity building seen as a crucial role, CANDELA provided training and development for the establishment of a producer organisation called RONAP. RONAP gather certified organic nuts and work closely with CANDELA in order to offer larger volumes of a high quality product whilst ensuring the protection of the environment. The promotion of commercial and social development of small-scale producers in Peru has also benefited by the formation of this organisation.
Working together
CANDELA works very closely with their castaneros (Brazil nut gatherers) and their families who live along the Madre de Dios river in Eastern Peru. The castaneros livelihood depends on the sound and responsible management of forest resources and they are working closely with the staff of CANDELA to improve the quality of their organic product.
CANDELA provides over 50 families with credit, food and river transport to their forest concessions to support the harvesting activity.
The nuts are brought to the CANDELA factory in Puerto Maldonado where they are shelled and dried before being transported by truck to Lima. Here the nuts are dried further, then sorted, graded and vacuum packed for export.
It is thanks to CANDELA (and their strategic alliance with RONAP) that we are able to bring you our unique and delicious Amazon Flame Brazil Nut Oil.
