Rebuilding in war-torn DRC

Equal Exchange partners with Solidarite Paysanne la Promotion de Actions Café et Development Integras (SOPACDI) to bring you this medium roasted coffee. SOPACDI is located in Kivu in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, an area that has been wracked by ethnic and gender-based violence that has destroyed the local economy and all but virtually extinguished the coffee sector. In 2002, SOPACDI was founded as a means to bridge ethnic strife and to tap into the international speciality coffee market. After connecting with Twin Trading in 2008, they were able to obtain funding for a program to assist them with business skills and to begin rehabilitating the farms and improving the infrastructure, including building the first new central coffee washing station in the country in over forty years. From its inception, SOPACDI has aimed to bridge ethnic groups and to produce the highest quality coffee possible. Each year the membership of SOPACDI grows. Over 20% of the members are women, many of whom are widows working to have their voices included in the co-op.

Roasting Block Goes Here

At our solar-powered roastery in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, our worker-owner team batch roasts and conducts production cuppings daily to bring out the best characteristics in each harvest. With four primary roast levels, we think there’s a favorite here for everyone. Obviously this needs to be updated for UK roasting.

Medium Roast: expect the unique citrus, nutty, fruity, or floral notes of each coffee to shine through.

Full City Roast: you’ll get a bit more of the caramel flavor that comes from the roasting process.

Vienna Roast: starts to bring the smoky aroma and smooth and rich body of a darker roast.

French Roast: with the natural oils fully expressed, it’s an intensely dark and smoky experience akin to dark chocolate.
